Google reportedly pitched the Pentagon a "Google-earth-like" AI surveillance tool

Yet another report from Gizmodo on the subject says that Google won't be renewing the project once its current contract runs out.

That engineer resigned from the company this week in protest of Maven and planned for Friday to be his last day.

The email was disclosed in a detailed New York Times report charting the backlash against Google, both internally and externally, after the firm won a slice of the US Department of Defense's Project Maven.

For now, Google is on the hook with Project Maven until 2019, and then it will reportedly stop.

Now, it appears that the blowback pressured Google into backing away from Maven: the contract expires next year and won't be renewed, Google Cloud CEO Diane Greene told employees in a meeting Friday morning, according to Gizmodo.

And, despite the fact Google's change of heart isn't a promise to be ethical, but instead that it'll only work with the military on this particular project for another half a year or so, it should still come as good news to those who were opposed to its involvement in the first place. The Department of Defense declined to comment when contacted by Fox News.

Google plans to discontinue a project through which it has been helping the United States military use artificial intelligence to analyze drone footage.

Internal emails reviewed by Gizmodo show that Google executives "viewed Project Maven as a golden opportunity" to win other AI contracts, including those pertaining to the military and U.S. intelligence groups.

The company has said it would soon release ethics guidelines for future military contracts.

Disquiet around Google's involvement with US Pentagon programme Project Maven has been building for some months now.

The research project in question is Project Maven, which involves Google developing and supporting AI algorithms that the Department of Defense (DoD) uses to analyze footage from military drones. Thousands of staff signed the petition, which stated: "Google should not be in the business of war".

While Greene had told employees during meeting that Maven was worth $9 million to the company, internal correspondence revealed the original contract - secured in September - was for $15 million, and that the overall budget for Maven was expected to hit at least $250 million, according to Gizmodo. We will update this post if we receive responses from either party. "We value all of our relationships with academic institutions and commercial companies involved with Project Maven".
