How the Hill Reacted to the Trump-Kim Summit

US President Donald Trump has said the North Korean denuclearisation process would be starting "very quickly" after he and Kim Jong Un signed an unspecified document.

A defector who used to be a North Korean diplomat said, "Even though he was not trained as a professional translator, he was picked up because of his outstanding English proficiency". Kim is likely to leave this afternoon while Trump will depart tonight. Generations of North Korean leaders have made and broken promises before - this Administration's success will be judged on whether it can eliminate Kim's nuclear weapons and verify they are gone.

"It is the most watered-down joint statement concerning these two nations ever", said Sung-Yoon Lee, a North Korea expert at Tufts University. At the time, North Korea had begun turning its nuclear fuel into warheads.

Many North Korea watchers have noted that the Singapore summit agreement lacks substance, despite Trump touting it as "very comprehensive".

This language certainly covers the underlying issues encompassed in North Korea's definition of hostile USA policy, but the lack of detail and the mirroring of past commitments is concerning.

U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018.

Trump also said that he would be willing to invite Kim to visit the White House following this first meeting.

"Not necessarily because of the President's mentioning of him but because of what we went through".

At a news conference wrapping up the summit, Trump told reporters he and Kim "have developed a very special bond". "Many people in the world will think of this as a scene from a fantasy...science fiction movie", Kim Jong-un was heard telling Donald Trump.

Trump is sounding optimistic about his ability to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program after a lengthy one-on-one meeting with leader Kim Jong Un.

But in the past, Mr Trump has been far more critical of Mr Kim's human rights record, claiming the dictator is leading one of the most brutal regimes in the world. Suspending the "war games" could harm US security interests in the region, which would create tension between the USA and its allies.

To former South Korean foreign minister Yoon Young-kwan, Trump's attempt to start at the top with a political rather than narrowly military approach to North Korea nevertheless sets it apart from all that went before.

"Think of it from the real estate prospective".

Language on North Korea's bombs was similar to what the leaders of North and South Korea came up with at their own summit in April. "At the end of the day, this is our last best chance to end this conflict without a war".

The joint statement itself is a list of very basic and aspirational goals, signaling that the the meeting and the agreement merely mark the beginning of long and complicated negotiations between the United States and Kim's brutal dictatorship. "But the President said he expected immediate action as a result of the talks".

The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions for years as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
