Hurricane Bud is weakening, could hit Mexico as tropical storm

Bud could reach the Los Cabos resort region by Thursday or Friday

Hurricane Bud, which has strengthened to a Category 3 storm, is projected to target the western coast of Mexico in the coming days.

Bud has 120 miles per hour maximum sustained winds and was moving northwest at 7 miles per hour, the NHC said.

The NHC alert said: "At 9am MDT (2pm GMT) the eye of Hurricane Bud was located near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 106.8 West. Bud is moving toward the northwest near 7 miles per hour (11 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue today and tonight with a decrease in forward speed".

"Significantly cooler waters around the southern tip of Baja California should reduce Bud's intensity below hurricane status before it reaches that land", the centre said.

In South Florida, the National Weather Service's Miami office is calling for daily rain through the week, with overnight and morning showers on the east coast and afternoon and evening storms on the Gulf Coast.

"Some additional strengthening is possible today, but a slow weakening trend is expected to begin by early Tuesday".

Bud is expected to produce rainfall accumulations of 75 to 150 millimeters across much of southwestern Mexico and waves of three to four meters in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.

A tropical storm watch is in effect between Manzanillo, Colima, and Cabo Corrientes.

The storm is expected to generate 3 to 6 inches of rain in southwestern Mexico, the NHC said, warning of possible flash floods and mud slides. The depression is now located about 665 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour.
