It shows the growing severity of the issue

"That's equalizing not because men are [committing suicide] less but women are doing it more".

The CDC's prevention plan also stresses the need for community financial support for those in need.

The state is rural, and studies show a connection between suicide and living in rural areas. Almost 45,000 suicides occurred in the United States in 2016 - more than twice the number of homicides - making it the 10th-leading cause of death. Nevada was the only state that saw no increase, and DE saw the smallest increase which was 5.9 percent.

In light of its findings, the CDC has also released an accompanying 'technical package, ' which details the agency's recommenced policies and programs.

Data from the National Violent Death Reporting System in 2015 reported that more than half of those who died by suicide did not have a known mental condition. Those without a known mental health condition, according to the report, were more likely to be male and belong to a racial or ethnic minority.

Contributing factors included "relationship problems or loss, substance misuse; physical health problems; and job, money, legal or housing stress", said the report.

The CDC, the top U.S. public health agency, said individual states need to do more to boost suicide prevention "and address the range of factors contributing to suicide".

"None of this is surprising information, which is not to trivialize its importance".

Rates varied widely across the country during the study period, from 6.9 per 100,000 residents per year killing themselves in Washington, D.C., to 29.2 per 100,000 residents in Montana - the highest in the country, followed by Alaska and Wyoming.

The issue has attracted additional attention this week after the death of designer Kate Spade, who was reportedly dealing with depression and anxiety. "Suicide is a public health crisis when you look at the numbers, and they keep going up".

And finally, Vermont has a lot of military veterans, and veterans as a group are twice as likely to die by suicide than the general population, Delaney said.

Asked whether that was a deliberate omission, because of the political climate surrounding gun control, Stone said that suicide rates have been increasing across all methods.

"Suicide is more than a mental health issue", Schuchat said.

'This kind of "perfectionism" not only affects women, but, in light of Spade's suicide, it is something we can highlight, ' she added'.

But Anestis believes that it's important to not beat around the bush when it comes to guns and to talk about the importance of things like setting waiting periods for purchase, and storing guns locked and unloaded. Approximately half of such deaths involve the use of a firearm.

The 56-year-old says she tried to commit suicide multiple times before getting help. "When you're suicidal, you're not thinking about anybody else, and it's not because your selfish, it's because you're not well". It's up everywhere. And we know that the rates are actually higher than what's reported.

The new report also found that, among USA states and the District of Columbia, suicide rates varied fourfold in 2014-2016, from about 7 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to 29 per 100,000 residents per year in Montana.
