Justice report provides ammo for both Trump, critics

President Donald Trump's attorneys, armed with the Department of Justice inspector general's report excoriating former FBI Director James Comey, now believe they can challenge any effort by the special counsel to pursue a subpoena seeking the President's testimony on obstruction of justice, according to sources familiar with their thinking. But it found no evidence that Comey showed political bias in his oversight of the investigation.

In interviews included in the report, both Strozk and Page acknowledged that some of their texts could be read as showing their bias against Trump, both during the early stages of the collusion investigation and after Trump assumed office in January 2017.

FBI Director Christoper Wray said "nothing" in the report "impugns" the integrity of the FBI workforce and that while the report found "errors in judgment" and policy violations, it found no evidence of political bias or improper consideration "actually impacting the investigations under review".

In September 2016, as part of the investigation into his communication with the underage teen, an FBI agent in NY found hundreds of thousands of emails on Weiner's laptop that were possibly relevant to the Clinton investigation. And Trump took it one step further, barreling out of the White House Friday for an unannounced, early-morning television interview that turned into a almost hour-long freewheeling give-and-take with reporters, during which he returned time and again to assert that report had exonerated him amid Mueller's ongoing probe into Russian election interference.

Trumps personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told “Fox & Friends” that the report casts doubt on whether Trump will ever agree to an interview with Muellers team because “why would he get interviewed by a corrupt investigation?”.

Trumps comments followed the IGs 500-page report that said Comey was “insubordinate” in his handling of the Clinton investigation because he broke agency protocol.

After the report's release on Friday, Clinton made fun of the Comey email revelation on Twitter, sharing a Politico article on the development, quipping, "But my emails". "The conclusions are reasonable, even though I disagree with some", he said.

The report lambastes Strzok and a now-retired Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer, Lisa Page, for text exchanges that it says were "deeply troubling" and created the appearance "that investigative decisions were impacted by bias or improper considerations".

"But my emails", she said, reacting in a three-word tweet.

Nevertheless, Clinton later blamed her loss to President Trump on Comey, who reopened the investigations into her private emails a week before the October election, after new emails were discovered on the laptop of Anthony Weiner.

When Manafort was first indicted, the White House said the charges had nothing to do with the president and the 2016 campaign.

Comey was sacked by Trump in May 2017 while leading the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation, an allegation the president has denied. "We'll stop it", Mr Strzok responded.

More importantly than anything, it totally exonerates me. Mueller removed Strzok from his team after Horowitz disclosed the texts to him.

The FBI leadership waited almost a month after receiving initial information about the laptop to reopen the investigation and notifying Congress about it, the IG report shows.
