Landon Donovan takes heat from United States internationals for Mexico-supporting ads

Donovan

Because the USA men's team failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is underway in Russian Federation, many soccer fans in the US have been debating whether to root for another country's team, or remain neutral until the USA qualifies for a future World Cup tournament.

'The big tournament is just about to kick off, but not everyone's team is going.

Carlos Bocanegra, a retired soccer player who was teammates with Donovan on the U.S. national team, was one of the most prominent people to call Donovan out. And that's ok, ' Donovan says at the opening of the ad. "So join me and their proud #sponsor @WellsFargo to cheer on our other team, Mexico", Donovan writes in the Twitter message.

Donovan has been appearing in promotions for Wells Fargo, and many, including past US internationals, let him have it via social media, for supporting the USA's bitter on-field rival even after the Americans failed to qualify for Russian Federation 2018.

Current Minnesota United FC soccer star Ethan Finlay conveyed his disgust by tweeting three green-faced emojis on the verge of vomiting.

"You grew up in SoCal and owe much of your soccer skill to playing with Mexicans", Donovan said to Bocanegra. Open your mind, stand for something & remember where you came from'.

That retort wasn't taken well by another of Donovan's former teammates, Mexican-American forward Herculez Gomez. Questioning ones loyalties to culture and/or heritage because HE questioned YOU for taking marketing dollars to "root" for your SPORTING RIVAL? "Mexico is not 'my team'".

Although there is some authenticity to Donovan's backing of El Tri - the U.S.'s all-time leading scorer spent this spring at Liga MX club Leon - the ad and several other campaigns like it have sparked backlash among USA internationals past and present, as well as ESPN presenter Sebastian Salazar.
