Lawmaker urges Russian women to be vigilant with WCup fans

Tamara Pletnyova said in an interview with Govorit Moskva radio station Russian women should abstain from sex with foreigners visiting the country for the tournament, citing concerns about a possible spike in single-parent families.

She warns that even if these women plan on marrying their foreign baby daddy, their child could end up stuck in another country with no means of getting back to Russian Federation.

She compared the situation to the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow, which led to some local women having then-unusual relationships with foreigners and falling pregnant. "We should have our own babies", Ms Pletnyova said.

"It's the children who suffer... and have suffered since the Soviet era". "These children then suffer and they suffered even in Soviet times", she said, suggesting the children of interracial couples had the worst experience. Pletnyova, whose committee also handles women and children's rights, said that the female journalist who accused one of her colleagues of sexual assault should dress more conservatively, or even quit. "I'm not a nationalist, but all the same".

Urging women to marry "Russian citizens" instead, she said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother" or being taken overseas by their fathers.

"Then they come to me at the committee and cry that the child was taken away, removed, and so forth".

"Even if they marry, they move her overseas, then she does not know how [to return] from there", Pletnyova, who is known for her conservative remarks, told the Govorit Moskva (Moscow Speaks) radio station on Wednesday.

"I'd like people in our country to marry for love, no matter what nationality as long as they are Russian citizens who will build a family, live peacefully, have children and raise them".

Her comments drew criticism and ridicule. "I hope not", she said.

Pletneva previously criticised the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment, tentatively spreading in Russian Federation.

The FIFA 2018 World Cup kicks off when hosts Russian Federation take on Saudi Arabia at Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday.

"Those who get harassed are probably the ones who want it themselves and give the occasion for it", she said in March, claiming that introducing laws in Russian Federation for the offense is "excessive".
