Made in India 'Uber Lite' rolls out for Android users

Uber Lite was designed in India. Uber

The app is essentially a stripped down version of the main Uber app with basic ride booking features. Uber Lite is a simple version of the rider app that saves space, works on any network, and on any Android phone.

Many other accessibility-focused features are in the pipeline, as Uber Lite is now rolling out in India only as part of a "pilot" program, with "more countries" to gain support "later this year". The app is made keeping in mind emerging markets, and India is the first place the company has chose to launch it. Uber Lite has been made available in Jaipur, Hyderabad, and Delhi for now.

With Uber Lite and any other "Lite" app, the aim is to provide users with the service even on low internet connectivity and older phones.

Keeping India's connectivity issues in mind, the Uber Lite app has a different interface that works for people even with limited data plans. The app is sized lesser than 5MB and is compatible with phones running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and higher. And the more you use Uber Lite, the smarter the app gets, learning where you go most often and surfacing those options for you to tap first, so you don't have to type your destination every time. If there are Global Positioning System or network issues, it will offer popular pickup points to choose from. You can also choose to adjust your pickup location on the map. After the cab is booked, you will be displayed with the driver's contact details. The new Uber Lite app will allow users to have the same experience but will have a smaller footprint. The company will be introducing more features soon with one being the choice of regional languages. Uber Lite is the latest to join in on this initiative.

In comparison, Ola Lite has a lot going on in the app and even comes with ride options for rentals and outstation. Even when on a network with poor connectivity, a response time just 300ms is touted, so you should be able to book a ride nearly immediately.
