Magnitude 6.1 quake kills three, stops factories in Japan's Osaka area

Japan earthquake

Japanese disaster authorities say more than 90 people were injured in the strong quake in Osaka on Monday morning.

Police inspect the site - covered by blue sheet - where a 9-year-old girl was killed by fallen wall near a school in Takatsuki, Osaka.

Besides electricity outages, at least one house caught fire and several major water pipes burst following the quake, according to footage shown by local TV.

The Tokaido Shinkansen services have been suspended between Maibara and Shin-Osaka stations and the Sanyo Shinkansen Line services have been stopped between Shin-Osaka and Okayama stations.

The Osaka prefectural government's disaster management department says two people - an elderly man and a nine-year-old girl - were found dead, while a Ibaraki city official confirmed a third victim, aged 84.

The government confirmed two of the deaths. In 2016, the magnitude 7 quake that caused significant damage and multiple casualties in southern Kumamoto was preceded two days earlier by a magnitude 6.2 temblor.

It set off multiple building fires and toppled walls. Train service was suspended across a wide area during the morning commute.

Japanese disaster authorities say two people have been found without vital signs and 41 others injured by an quake in western Japan.

A powerful quake struck Osaka and neighboring prefectures on June 18, knocking out power in a widespread area and disrupting Shinkansen and local train services.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has updated the magnitude of the quake to 6.1, stronger than the initial 5.9 magnitude.

The strongest shaking was in an area north of Osaka city, the agency said. There are reports of scattered damage including broken glass and concrete.

The epicenter of the natural disaster was just north of Osaka city, said the Japan Meteorological Agency, which originally put the magnitude at 5.9 but later raised it to 6.1.

No tsunami is expected, according to the agency.

Japan Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters at a hastily convened press conference that there were no immediate reports of heavy damage, and that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had ordered relevant ministries to gather information on the quake.
