Minor explosion at Hawaii volcano spews more ash into the air

Hawaii officials believe about 600 homes have been destroyed by lava flows since the Kilauea volcano erupted more than a month ago, according to The Daily Mail.

Lava illuminates a sign in Leilani Estates during ongoing eruptions of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii on June 9. "FEMA doesn't have a magic wand to make it not happen".

"In the interim, they should be seeking insurance if they have insurance".

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory warned residents to avoid the ocean entry area, as it continued to produce large plumes of lava.

It's possible a new fissure will open or vigorous flows could emerge from vents that have been inactive.

A spokesperson for Hawaii County Civil Defence said: "What used to be the bay is now all lava bed, new land, nearly a mile out into the ocean". Residents can attend a community meeting Thursday to learn more about volcanic ash and vog, the Civil Defense Agency reported. The other half live in a part of the subdivision that remains under a mandatory evacuation order.

Eruptions on the Big Island started May 3, forcing thousands to flee their homes.

"To all the victims out there of this very, very bad time, I say it publicly, it hurts like hell today", Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said at a news conference late Monday.

Already, the county has shelled out at least $3 million for disaster response, officials said.

Also Saturday, there was an explosive eruption of rock and ash at Kilauea's summit at 4:50 a.m. that produced a plume expected to possibly blow to the southwest toward Wood Valley, Pahala and Ocean View.

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area Wednesday with the force of a 5.4 magnitude natural disaster and hurled an ash plume that reached 10,000 feet above sea level. USGS scientists have been unable to determine when the eruptions will end.
