Missing Girl Found Safe With Dog By Her Side

Dog’s bark helps cops find missing 3-year-old girl in Missouri cornfield

A lost 3-year-old was found Friday morning in a Butler County, Missouri, cornfield after going missing about 12 hours before.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Clark Parrott said the girl could not be found overnight despite the search, which included a plane.

The massive search for the toddler, spearheaded by her family and involving police personnel, volunteers and several aircrafts lasted nearly 12 hours. Just after 8am, search dogs began barking - and a tiny dog voice started yapping in response.

The girl had several mosquito bites but was otherwise unharmed. They believe the child wandered away from her home, and the dog, identified by KFVS-TV as "Fat Heath", followed and stayed with her all night.

"They said that she was asleep whenever he picked her up", Merritt told KFVS in an interview.

Volunteer Makayla Hardcastle said the thick corn field made it an especially challenging search. 'She was definitely exhausted, hot, really sweaty and it took a while to drink anything.

'I looked for her by myself thinking maybe she was just in the woods or somewhere where I just couldn't see her, ' Merritt said. The dog, named Fat Heath, is now being hailed a hero and a very good boy on social media. "The corn feels like razor blades cutting you, I think anyway, especially for a child", said Hardcastle.

Her mother said she is keeping a close eye on those bites.
