Net neutrality rules are dead, but fight lives on

"The fight to restore net neutrality rules has new urgency today and moving forward as we continue to work in the House of Representatives to repeal the FCC's awful decision".

We talked to the owner of Mad Mike's Computer Repair, who says that how much ISPs decide to block or slow down websites and apps may depend on whether people keep or leave their providers.

The rules forced internet providers like Midco, Vast Broadband, and Comcast to allow equal access to web content.

"If certain services are blocked or throttled, they get it", Mr. Doyle said.

Passed by the Republican-led FCC in December, the Restoring Internet Freedom Order ends the agency's prohibitions against internet service providers blocking, slowing down, or providing preferential treatment to particular internet sites and services.

Comcast, AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile can also slow down the streaming of a content activity on their network under the new guideline.

Most notably, the repeal removes the Title II classification of broadband internet that put it in line with essential utilities like electricity.

Media captionWhat is net neutrality and how could it affect you? Several states including NY and Washington, have passed regulations that impose net neutrality on a local level. That decision goes into effect Monday, shifting the authority for policing the broadband industry to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Pending some surprise moves by the House of Representatives, net neutrality will officially be repealed today.

The earlier administration - under President Barack Obama - had asked internet providers to face strict regulations, arguing consumers needed protection from internet provider practices and said internet providers could engage in reasonable conduct.

As of today, Obama-era regulations were rolled back, getting rid of what's known as net-neutrality. And I think the internet service providers can do that, particularly in rural areas where you have only one carrier.

However, in the op-ed Pai does not defend against any of the common arguments for Net Neutrality.

But net neutrality remains alive and well in Washington, thanks to a bi-partisan bill that was signed into law earlier this year. The first would be protecting users from bias caused by internet providers, who would be able to offer faster services to companies that paid them more.

Pai attempted to bolster the FCC's decision through claims that the new regulations introduces stronger transparency laws and hence more protection for the consumer.

"We've empowered the FTC to take action against any company that might act in any competitive way", Pai said.

ISPs have said they won't block or throttle legal websites, though they've left open the potential for charging more for some data delivery.

Other states, including New York, Vermont, and Montana, are using executive orders and various other means of reinstating net neutrality, but at the moment, Washington is the only state to pass a bill protecting it. OR passed similiar legislation, but it won't go into effect until next year, as Motherboard reports.
