Nike Won't Supply Iran With Cleats for FIFA World Cup

Nike refuses to supply Iran World Cup boots amid US sanctions

Iran's national football team has reacted with anger after Nike said it would refuse to provide players with its boots for the World Cup due to new U.S. sanctions.

Last month, US President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the deal that traded a lifting of worldwide sanctions for restrictions on Tehran's nuclear weapons programme.

Just days before their opening World Cup match against Morocco, Iran is scrambling to find a new footwear situation after Nike, which previously supplied the team's boots, announced it would not longer do so.

"U.S. sanctions mean that, as a USA company, Nike can not supply shoes to players in the Iranian national team at this time", the Oregon-based company said in a statement obtained by ESPN.

Nike's use of the sanctions to justify its decision has raised concerns because in 2014, when economic sanctions were in place against Iran, the national team wore Nike cleats during the World Cup games.

Team Melli' or Iran national football national team are among the first country to reach Russian Federation where the Fifa World cup is being hosted.

Some of Iran's players are understood to have asked non-Iranian players from their club teams to loan them boots, while others are said to have acquired them from friends or gone out to buy their own footwear in the shops.

Queiroz told Sky Sports that in his opinion Nike's comment was unnecessary as everybody is aware of the sanctions.

"They should come out and apologise because this arrogant conduct against 23 boys is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary".

Iran's first match is on Saturday against Morocco.

It remains to be seen whether Queiroz's defiant verdict bears fruit, given any loser of Friday's crunch fixture in Saint Petersburg would be left needing to beat either Spain or Portugal to reach the last 16. "It will be a matter of making the most of any chances we get".
