The world watched as President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrived at the Capella Hotel in Singapore, shook hands and posed for photos before going into their historic one-on-one meeting early Tuesday morning. A quick answer: Probably not.
The decision to halt military exercises in South Korea has bewildered many current and former US defense officials, who only learned about it when Trump made his remarks.
Trump: "Chairman Kim and I just signed a joint statement in which he reaffirms his unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".
The state media said talks were "epoch making" and would help to kickstart a "radical switchover in the most hostile [North Korea]-US relations".
He acknowledged that many difficulties are likely to lie ahead but vowed to work together with the U.S., North Korea and others to bring lasting peace to the Korean Peninsula. Now, we're going to see. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea ...
And Kim's media machine told the North Korean public how Mr Trump has reciprocated the offer of Kim visiting the U.S. in a state visit.
Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said on Wednesday that his country's military exercises with the United States would continue, calling them vital. He said the USA wants North Korea to take "major" nuclear disarmament steps within the next two years - before the end of Trump's first term in 2021.
The reported agreement, if confirmed by the U.S., could be considered as a concession by Trump because U.S. officials had called for the North to take swift disarmament measures before getting major outside concessions and benefits.
Almost an hour later, noted the "fortune" the US will save as a result of his commitment to end U.S.
"When I met him today, we have a very good relationship, I feel", Mr. Trump said.
New Delhi has held that it wouldn't either prune or close its mission in North Korea, resisting United States pressure to slash its diplomatic presence in Pyongyang. -South Korea alliance, forged in blood during the 1950-53 Korean War, should remain strong throughout the push for a negotiated end to the nuclear tensions.
"U.S. troops are not bargaining chips to be offered up in an off-handed manner", Duckworth said in a statement.
"Kim Jong-un got what he wanted at the Singapore Summit: the global prestige and respect of a one-on-one meeting with the American president, the legitimacy of North Korean flags hanging next to American flags in the background", said Paul Haenle, director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center. "Trump's suspension of war games is a first step", said Chellaney.
"I'm not for Russian Federation, I'm for the United States", Trump said.
To some commentators, Trump's choice of language was a major problem.
"We also hope that the resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue will take into account and address our concerns about proliferation linkages extending to India's neighbourhood", it added. Bush took a tougher stance toward North Korea, and the 1994 nuclear deal collapsed because of suspicions that the North was running a secret uranium program.
"The Trump-Kim summit was no doubt an epochal event".
The likelihood of Kim Jong Un launching a first strike against the USA, thereby bringing on "fire and fury", was low.
"Trump wanted to make it look like he did something big, whether he did something big or not".
Kimmel show personality Guillermo Rodriguez and the host proceeded to sit down for a mock summit to sign their own version of the "friendship agreement" that Trump and Kim signed.
Trump then pivoted to fondness for China's leader.
With both annual "war games" concluded until 2019, Trump now has time to hammer out a concrete agreement on denuclearization with Kim, details of which were scant in the deal signed between the two leaders.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the Trump administration will seek "major, major disarmament" steps from North Korea over the next two years, The Associated Press reported. According to the reviews, Trump didn't get much, including what he'd asked for.
