Norwegian lawmakers nominate Trump for 2018 Nobel Peace Prize

Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump

Two far-right Norwegian politicians have nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, lauding his efforts to denuclearize North Korea.

The peace prize, first awarded in 1901, was endowed by the Swedish inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel.

Nominations must be sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee before February 1.

Nominations for this year's prize also formally closed on February 1, before the summit was agreed.

Amundsen nominated Trump along with his fellow Progress Party colleague Christian Tybring-Gjedde.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with Trump for a summit Tuesday in Singapore, where they signed an agreement to work together towards peace and denuclearization.

A group of U.S. lawmakers also are backing Trump's nomination for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

A few suggested a less "mainstream" option for the next Nobel Prize victor, recalling Dennis Rodman's efforts in establishing the dialogue between the United States and North Korea. "The sanctions decimated the North Korean economy and have been largely credited for bringing North Korea to the negotiating table", Republican lawmakers wrote.

Asked afterward if he deserved the honor, Trump said: "Everyone thinks so, but I would never say it". So while Trump and Kim could be among the 330 nominees for 2018, an award linked to North Korea may be more likely in 2019.

The most recent Americans to win the Peace Prize were then-President Obama in 2009 and former Vice President Al Gore in 2007.

Kim backed off in response to Trump's multiple demonstrations of USA military power and resolve, and his toughening of economic sanctions against North Korea. In return, Trump promised to end "war games", or joint military exercises, with South Korea. This year stands in stark contrast to last year, when Trump and Kim traded barbs and threats.
