Paul raccoon safely trapped on tower roof

Paul raccoon safely trapped on tower roof

As the sun set in St. Paul, Minnesota Tuesday, this raccoon settled into his temporary home.

Although the local fire department and building workers tried to rescue it by using a makeshift ladder, it scampered away and started climbing the nearby UBS Plaza.

The world is now watching a pretty ballsy raccoon who made a decision to climb a skyscraper earlier today and is yet to come back down.

No word yet on how crews plan to get it down.

Minnesota Public Radio staffers managed to snag naming rights for the animal - inundating the internet with the Twitter hashtag #MPRRaccoon, which promptly caught on.

After registering its immediate peril, the creature climbed the first 20 storeys of the building fairly rapidly and remained there for much of Tuesday afternoon, sleeping on the 20th floor.

Animal control filled the roof with the aroma of food to encourage the raccoon to climb further upward.

"I am so proud of this little rascal - such a fricking champ!", said Dana Frazer as she watched a live feed of the raccoon's climb on Periscope, a live streaming site.

A raccoon scrambles along a ledge on the side of the Town Square building in downtown St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

The raccoon reached as high as the 23rd floor before night fell.

"We were all anxious about him", Sheila Donnelly-Coyne, an attorney who works on the 23rd floor of the UBS building, told NPR.

By Wednesday morning it had made it to the roof of the building, easing fears that it would plummet to its death.
