Reds in talks with Shaqiri as alternative to Fekir

Liverpool's big-money move for Nabil Fekir collapsed

Fekir would have been an outstanding signing for Liverpool, and would have added a certain level of potency to their already unsafe front-line.

Shaqiri's £13.5m price tag would only be a fraction of Fekir's valuation and would enable Liverpool to bring the ex-Bayern Munich player in on the cheap, rather than paying over the odds for a young emerging talent to make the move to Anfield.

"From what I've been told, this is unlikely to get done before the World Cup, if at all".

Fekir, who scored 23 goals for Lyon in Ligue 1 last term, was the Reds' prime transfer target and was seen as the long-term replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

Though Klopp will be able to count on midfield reinforcements in the form of former Leipzig no. 8 Naby Keita and Fabinho come the new season, work still needs to be done.

Last week, talk began of Liverpool's interest in wantaway Stoke City man Xherdan Shaqiri, with a £12m release clause said to exist in his contract that can be activated if the club was relegated.

Liverpool wouldn't be willing to pay much beyond that figure but a move could happen if Stoke are willing to sell.

The Mirror's report adds that Liverpool will take a step back from the transfer market as they assess the situation while the World Cup goes on.

Fekir's France are expected to go far in Russian Federation and if he plays frequently, Liverpool may feel more confident that he can handle the rigours of the Premier League.
