Robert De Niro gets standing ovation for Trump blast at Tony Awards

"I agree", Kushner said when asked about the De Niro moment, dropping an F-bomb of his own in relation to the president.

Actor Robert De Niro said "f-- Trump" at the Tony Awards Sunday night and got a standing ovation.

The statement in response from CBS: "Mr. De Niro's comments were unscripted and unexpected".

Trump and his top economic aides launched scathing attacks on Trudeau over the weekend amid their ongoing fight on trade.

The denunciation is less of a surprise when you consider that a month before Trump was elected, De Niro made a video in which he called him a "pig" and a "bullshit artist".

De Niro appeared on stage at New York's Radio City Music Hall to introduce rocker and Tony Awards performer Bruce Springsteen.

"F*** Trump!" he exclaimed.

Following the G7 summit in Quebec last week, Trump lashed out on Twitter, accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of being "very dishonest" and "weak".

He did not elaborate on his comment and switched immediately to a prepared introduction of Springsteen. The actor, producer, and director has also played the special counsel Robert Mueller on "Saturday Night Live".

De Niro previously called Trump a "dog" and a "bulls*** artist" while threatening to physically assault him.

"America is being run by a madman who wouldn't recognize the truth if it came inside a bucket of his beloved Colonel Sanders Fried Chicken", De Niro said.

American viewers watching the Tonys at home only heard silence - the broadcast on CBS bleeped De Niro's expletive-heavy intro - but they saw the audience's largely enthusiastic reaction, the Associated Press reported.
