Roger Stone met with Russian without Donald Trump's knowledge, Rudy Giuliani says

WaPo Roger Stone met with Russian in 2016

Stone also communicated about the meeting with Michael Caputo, a former Trump communications aide who once worked to rehab Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Post has found that Greenberg has in fact provided information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation but there's no evidence yet that supports the claim that he was working for them when he set up a meeting with Stone. The previously undisclosed meeting was reported by the Washington Post on Sunday.

Stone and Manafort in the 1970s started a political consulting firm together, as The Post has also reported, which specialized in representing dictators such as the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos, and other notorious human rights violators including African guerilla warlord Jonas Savimbi. Stone told the Post he shot down Greenberg's request.

"I can't imagine anything got back to the then-presidential candidate (Donald Trump) that was of any substance if (Stone) had concluded it was a waste of time", Giuliani said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union". "Whether it's the Trump Tower meeting, and when it looked like that information was going to be disclosed to the public, then Donald Trump Jr. and his people got people got the email out out to in front of it to and do control". Stone said he met the man, who identified himself as Henry Greenberg, at a restaurant there to discuss making a deal. Greenberg denies Stone's account, saying he brought a Ukrainian friend to the meeting who did the talking. Greenberg, who did not reveal the information he claimed to possess, wanted Trump to pay $2 million for the political dirt, Stone said.

Caputo and Stone exchanged text messages after the meeting, according to the Post.

Caputo's lawyer, Dennis Vacco, said his client had "simply forgotten about this brief encounter in 2016", and only remembered it as he was preparing for his interview with Mueller's team. Caputo also "forgot" to mention the suspicious meeting in his own congressional testimony, the Post reported. He alternatively said Stone had never talked to the president about it, and that he didn't know if Stone had. He later confirmed it, but claimed that he had not asked for money. "It led to no information just like the thing with Stone led to no information", Giuliani said.

"The Russian way", Caputo said. But Mueller's team did.

The report is the latest example of Trump campaign allies having contact with Russians and being less than forthcoming about them.

Several members of the campaign were also approached by another US government informant in a possible bid to glean intelligence on Russian efforts to sway the race.
