Salah still a doubt for SWC opener against Uruguay

Egypt's forward Mohamed Salah attends a training session at the Akhmat Arena stadium in Grozny

However, Salah did some light running in Grozny on Monday, monitored by medical staff, as the other Egypt players took part in a group warm-up.

Egypt have played down the claims made by forward Mohamed Salah that he will be ready for their first match at the World Cup against Uruguay.

However, Salah expressed reassurance and high hopes on Sunday, "I'm excited".

"Salah is getting better". So I thought to myself, I have quite a few games to play before the end of the season, I can break the all-time record!

"We can't push him to play the opening match because we care about his future".

Footage by RT's Ruplty video agency showed Salah training individually with a physical therapist at the stadium in the Chechen capital, Grozny, which the Egyptian national team chose to base its camp during the tournament. He may yet be fit to face Russian Federation on June 19 in Saint Petersburg, though, and then Saudi Arabia on June 25 in Volgograd according to AFP.

Sporting a turquoise-and-white tracksuit, gushed about Salah, saying the Egypt and Liverpool goal machine was "the best footballer in the world, and an overall ideal person".

Egypt, who are in Group A along with hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, faced the South Americans Uruguay on Friday, June 15, before taking on Russia on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 25.

Following an exhausting 16-hour flight, the team faces another four hours on a plane for the game against Egypt, which will be played in Ekaterinburg.
