Salmonella melon recall includes these Georgia stores

Salmonella melon outbreak

The melon warning comes days after the apparent end of an E. coli bacteria outbreak that killed one person, sent 75 to hospitals, and caused a nationwide warning against eating romaine lettuce. The reported cases were in IL (6), in (11), MI (32), Missouri (10) and OH (1).

As reported by The New York Times, packages of fresh-cut watermelon, honeydew melon and cantaloupe are now being recalled in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

A Hancock County woman was among those sickened by a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melons.

The CDC reported Saturday that the melon has been recalled in eight states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina.

The melon was sold in plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.

The investigation is ongoing to determine if products went to additional stores or states, the agencies said. Kroger's pre-cut melon and pre-cut fruit salads sold in Kroger stores in Georgia are sourced from a different supplier, according to Kroger's Atlanta division corporate affairs manager Felix Turner.

If consumers find they purchased or received the products in question, they are advised to not eat the product and to throw the product away.

Pre-cut melon purchased at Kroger, Jay C or Payless stores in IN and MI.

Retailers are being urged not sell or serve recalled precut melon products distributed by Caito Foods Distribution, Gordon Food Service and SpartanNash Distribution. Whole melon is still OK to eat, the CDC said.

-Number of people sickened and hospitalized: The CDC reports 60 people infected, 31 of which have been hospitalized, 51.7 percent. The company says the products, which were produced at its Indianapolis facility, have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.
