Steve Bannon defends Trump administration's 'zero tolerance' border policy

Border crossers

In early May, the Trump administration made a decision to prosecute adults caught crossing the border illegally, which requires children to be separated from those adults.

"This new policy of the Trump administration... is undermining the founding values of this country", said Representative David Cicilline.

"The Democrats are forcing the breakup of families at the Border with their awful and cruel legislative agenda", he tweeted. He has falsely claimed that Democrats are responsible for the practice.

"Democrats in Congress have opposed every measure that would close these immigration loopholes and bring this slaughter to an end", he said. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a statement on Wednesday criticizing the government's immigration policies.

The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, who delivered a prayer at Trump's inauguration, signed a letter calling the practice "horrible".

Bannon's comment that King would be "proud" of Trump was not the first time he had made the assertion.

By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press - Nearly 2,000 minors have been separated from their families at the USA border over a six-week period during a crackdown on illegal entries, according to Department of Homeland Security figures obtained by The Associated Press.

Last Friday, the administration revealed it had removed nearly 2,000 children from their families within a six-week time frame from April to May, showing there are serious consequences to the current policy. The figure is the only one released by the goverment.

During an interview with "Fox & Friends" on Friday on the front lawn of the White House, Trump said he wouldn't support a moderate bill. "The thinking in the building is to force people to the table".

Trump is calculating that this, yes, unconscionable policy will give him leverage in congressional negotiations on immigration reform.

'The children can be taken care of quickly, beautifully and immediately. In English and Spanish, it states: "We are and always will be a nation of immigrants". "And it's an effort to extort a bill to their liking in the Congress". None spoke in support of the bill.

"I'm looking at both of them", he said.

"Democrats are good at only three things, High Taxes, High Crime and Obstruction", Trump said, using the argument to promote Republican candidates ahead of the November midterms.

Kellyanne Conway told NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday that "nobody likes" pulling apart families.

Facing a national uproar, House GOP leaders included a provision in the immigration proposal that would require families to be kept together for as long as they are in the custody of the Homeland Security Department. "They are holding the kids hostage".

Almost 2000 children were separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May after Attorney-General Jeff Sessions announced a new Trump administration "zero-tolerance" policy enacted this year that prosecutes all unlawful immigrants as criminals. Those migrants had avoided detention during the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. "I hate it. I hate to see separation of parents and children".

"He's following laws, very simply, that were given to us and forced upon us by the Democrats", Trump said.

"Ripping children out of their parents' arms to inflict harm on the child to influence the parents", he added, "is unacceptable".

Miller, who is Jewish, argued in White House meetings that the new policy would deter illegal immigration.

Some senior officials think Democrats will be pressured by the policy to cut an immigration deal. She said those who work there are doing what they could to make sure the children's needs are met.

"Compromising on the rule of law to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants is the wrong path to take", she said of the House plan. "And so he went to a zero tolerance policy".

Democrats have been incorporating the plight of the separated children in their midterm election campaigns.

"In no other context are we being asked to detain children with parents who are facing criminal charges".

Democratic Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke, who is challenging Sen. On a Texas border bridge, parents and children have been sleeping in sweltering heat for several days awaiting their turn. "These stories are horrifying", Harder said.
