EMERGENCY services are responding to a suspected unknown substance that was found close to a passenger jet at Sydney airport.

Five NSW Fire and Rescue trucks are going through security clearance at the global airport after receiving a call at 7.48am on Friday (9.48am NZT) that "a substance was found in the hold", a spokesman told AAP.

Emergency crews, along with airport firefighters, were alerted to the incident at 7.48am on Friday after reports "a white substance" was found after the plane touched down.

A "low irritant chemical" was discovered as baggage handlers unpacked flight 73 from Los Angeles Airport which landed at 7.15am.

Fire and Rescue crews were at the hold of the plane, testing the powdered chemical substance which was spilt.

A NSW Fire & Rescue spokesman confirmed seven specialised hazardous materials crews were deployed to the tarmac.
