Thousands evacuated as raging wildfire devastates Colorado homes

Entire San Juan National Forest To Be Closed To Public

Escorted traffic will be able to travel on Highway 550 from 8 a.m.to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 14.

The 416 Fire and a separate fire burning nearby, the so-called Burro Fire, also prompted state parks officials to close several wildlife areas to the public. It is 15 percent contained.

Winds were gusting about 15-35 miles per hour in Summit County Tuesday afternoon after the fire started, but are expected to settle to 5-10 miles per hour after about 6 p.m.

Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that while winds diminished on Monday from the weekend, "It's still a fan on the fire". "With the storms comes the lightning and those gusty winds". The bride wrote on her Instagram that the last-minute change made the day hectic but that she was thankful for everyone who helped pull it off. "Thank you to the firefighters working hard to keep the Durango community safe, we are so grateful".

The fire has destroyed some structures, but investigators have not said how many or what type. "We want to make sure that what we do aligns well with all of the insets and parameters that we're receiving".

The 416 Fire - named after its emergency service call number - is by far the largest of at least a half-dozen blazes raging across Colorado.

"The concern is that we wanted to prevent more human-caused fires from starting", Hooley said.

"Things are looking really good around the two subdivisions at this time", Jim Genung, with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit, said at a news conference. Officials have prepared fire lines in advance of Purgatory and residences in that area in case the fire continue to spread in that direction.

The evacuations have been lifted except for the area near one hot spot firefighters are continuing to battle.

As the eastern portion of the fire has calmed, the fire has become more active in other areas.

The order is effective Friday for the Mountainair and Sandia districts, and in place June 22 for the Mount Taylor district.

The National Forest Service says as of 9 pm on Tuesday the wildfire on the Wyoming-Colorado border has burned 5,244 acres. They're also concerned about mudslides. "But they can be gone for up to two weeks", said Public Information Officer for GJFD, Ellis Thompson-Ellis.

"Weather is going to continue to play a role over the next few days, continuing to influence some of our decisions and the fire behavior", Jamie Knight, a 416 fire spokeswoman, told the Denver Post.
