Toyota wins the 2018 Le Mans 24hrs!

BMW M8 GTE Le Mans 3 830x553

Fernando Alonso celebrated a victorious debut for Toyota in the 86th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours race. "They should hold it every two or three weeks".

The trio's TS050 Hybrid ran faultlessly throughout, and spent much of the race scrapping with the sister machine of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose-Maria Lopez. In 2016, Nakajima himself was in the lead Toyota about to cross the finish line, but with five minutes to go in the race a small hardware failure brought the auto to a dead stop in the final lap. Few will have forgotten Toyota's history at Le Mans.

The 36-year-old's ambition has become to win motorsport's famous "triple crown" and he competed at Indianapolis last year, impressing the regulars by running competitively and being in with a chance of victory until his engine failed in the closing stages.

Indeed, Toyota has been campaigning at Le Mans for years.

The Spaniard won the race at his first attempt to give the Japanese manufacturer, which had at times seemed jinxed, victory at their 20th attempt.

Both Porsche and Audi had long since shut down their Le Mans programmes, meaning 2018's LMP1 top class was a two-horse race between both Toyotas.

Toyota had to overcome a 60-second penalty earned by Buemi for speeding in a slow zone to triumph at the 19th attempt. Alonso strapped himself in and incredibly managed to claw back a huge deficit to give the #8 auto a fighting chance.

It was the #3 Rebellion R13-Gibson of Mattias Beche, Gustavo Menezes and Thomas Laurent that finished in third place, standing on the final step of the overall podium, emerging victorious over Rebellion Racing's lead #1 vehicle fronted by Andre Lotterer, Neel Jani and Bruno Senna which was the victim of an accident on the opening lap of the race.

In the 16th hour of the race, Nakajima retook the lead and the number eight auto was in control for the duration.

The G-Drive Oreca of Jean-Eric Vergne, Andrea Pizzitola and Romain Rusinov won the LMP2 division. "We had to be really focused until the chequered flag".

'Sure, ' you might be thinking, 'it was easy for Toyota because it had no proper competition.' And yet, as Damon Hill remarked after this year's Le Mans race, "you have to beat Le Mans". Will he stop F1 at the end of this year to focus on Indycar totally, or stay in F1 and just do the Indy 500 again next year, as he did in 2017?
