Trump blasts migration in Europe as causing 'culture' change

Angela Merkel risks being ousted as German leader by interior minister Horst Seehofer

The chairman of Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU) said on Monday he was ready to turn away at the German border migrants registered in other European Union states if Chancellor Angela Merkel does not seal an EU migrants deal later this month. In his previous job as Bavarian governor, Seehofer was one of the leading critics of Merkel's decision in 2015 to leave Germany's borders open as migrants streamed across the Balkans.

The policy would undermine Mrs Merkel's authority after she operated an open-door approach in 2015 which led to thousands of migrants entering Germany after first coming to the European Union through another country.

"We are convinced that Germany needs reversal in its asylum policy", said Markus Söder, a member of Seehofer's party and the governor of Bavaria. Still, polls suggest that its absolute majority in the Bavarian state legislature is in danger in the October 14 state election and it is being challenged on the right by the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party.

The immigration showdown comes as Merkel has vowed to reject a possible proposal that would "turn away" new migrants and asylum seekers seeking to enter Germany from Syria, Libya, and other nations. More than 1.6 million migrants, mostly Muslims fleeing wars in the Middle East, have arrived in Germany since 2014.

Some German journalists also dissected Trump's assumption that Merkel's standing may be in peril over her immigration policies. "Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!" he tweeted. According to government statistics, crime in Germany fell nearly 10 percent previous year, reaching its lowest level since 1992. She has bought herself some time but has two-week deadline to find a European solution or face the dissolution of the coalition government. "But just remember, a country without borders is not a country at all". This is true, but only when those groups are compared to migrants from North Africa, who committed 17 percent of violent crimes recorded in the German state of Lower Saxony in those two years, despite making up less than one percent of the migrant population. It would also gravely weaken the CSU, whose dominance of Bavarian politics relies on its influence in Berlin.

Hogan Gidley, a White House deputy press secretary, charged Monday that Democrats are blocking a legislative solution to the problem because they want "a radical open-border policy". Her government toughened asylum rules and declared several countries "safe", meaning people from there can't expect to get refuge in Germany.

Angela Merkel is seeking emergency talks with European Union leaders as her Government is teetering on the verge of collapse in a row about immigration.

The European Commission has voiced confidence that EU leaders could agree at a summit next week on handling migrants and refugees, but some diplomats were much less optimistic.
