Trump’s vow to end military drills with Seoul stuns a region

President Trump walked with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island on Tuesday

During the meeting, Trump offered to end the joint military exercise between the USA and the South Korean government. "We did sanctions and all of the things that you would do", Trump said.

"This is their life and their future", she said. "I think the summit talk is very important because we are really covering a lot of people".

The meeting in Singapore produced a handful of commitments from the Kim regime, including a restated intent to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

Trump also seemed annoyed that US bomber aircraft make six-plus hour flights from the Pacific island of Guam to the Korean peninsula as part of its exercise routine.

The pledge, absent from the joint statement Trump signed with Kim, appeared to come as news to both South Korea and the Pentagon.

Trump's surprise, nearly offhand comments, made during a news conference after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, seemingly upended decades of the USA defense posture on the Korean Peninsula.

"Creating friction with a key ally with an issue like that may have been a mistake, frankly", he told AFP.

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 war and has used them in a variety of large-scale drills created to sharpen skills and test troops' ability to operate effectively with their South Korean partners.

But as President Trump receives heapings of praise and skepticism, Vice President Mike Pence and a GOP lawmaker are sending conflicting messages over whether the United States will officially end military drills off the Korean peninsula.

And what "exactly was the president committing to?" he added.

Pompeo added, President Trump is very prepared for his upcoming meeting with Kim Jong Un and is eager to achieve real progress.

Since the 1970s, the United States and South Korea have held a major summertime exercise called Ulchi Freedom Guardian that involves tens of thousands of troops.

In fact, Trump and Kim's agreement made no mention of North Korea's human rights abuses, and Trump said following the summit that Kim "loves his people".

"There is no single change in the suspension of the South-U.S. joint military exercise compared to the past", Nam said.

"The Singapore summit statement is essentially aspirational: no definitions of denuclearization, no timelines, no details as to verification", Haass said on Twitter.

However, it was only in 1992 that the USA and North Korea rekindled diplomatic.
