Trump says NKorea no longer a nuclear threat

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday welcomed a document signed by North Korea's leader at an unprecedented summit with US President Donald Trump as a "first step" towards denuclearisation.

After arriving back in the U.S., the president also tweeted that "everybody can now feel much safer".

"It's important that we don't lose sight of the fact that Kim Jong Un is a butcher and he is a butcher of his own people", Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, said Tuesday.

Pompeo also said he was very confident that "sometime in the next week or so we will begin the engagement" with North Korea, though he didn't know the timing or how meetings would be structured.

"We're hopeful that we can achieve that in, what was it, the next two and half years", the top American diplomat said when asked how soon the USA wanted to see North Korea move to dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

Critics pointed to the lack of specifics in the agreement while questioning whether Trump gave up too much while securing too little in return during his several hours of talks with Kim in what was the first meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader. But Lu Chao, an expert on North Korea at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China's Shenyang city, says the guarantees are probably "a repeat of previous US statements that it does not seek to overthrow the current regime in North Korea".

"We save a fortune by not doing war games, as long as we are negotiating in good faith - which both sides are!" the president wrote. That is because under the deal, the North retains its nuclear warheads, the missiles to launch them and has not agreed to any specific process to get rid of them.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Seoul, said the United States hoped for "major disarmament" of North Korea by the end of 2020.

The IL-62 was one of three aircraft that flew to Singapore from North Korea's capital Pyongyang on Sunday.

"I think it's gonna be really successful, and I think we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt", Trump said.

Kim's ruling party's main media mouthpiece, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, called the sitdown "the meeting of the century" on its front page Wednesday. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

Trump's comment that the threat was now over was unlikely to provide relief to Japan and South Korea, both home to large USA military presences, as both expressed concerns over his decision to halt the military exercises, which Pyongyang has long claimed are preparations for an invasion.

Trump: "Chairman Kim and I just signed a joint statement in which he reaffirms his unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

Asked whether he would invite Kim to the White House, Trump said: "Absolutely, I will". The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

"The United States is our ally, so the joint military drills are still necessary to maintain our relationship with the US", said Lee Jae Sung, from Incheon. -South Korean drill that is due in August, Reuters reported. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

North Korea still has nuclear weapons.
