U.S., Mexico And Canada Win Bid To Host 2026 World Cup

North American trio beats Morocco to host 2026 World Cup

The United States, Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup after beating bid rival Morocco, FIFA has announced.

Morocco, which has now lost five bid campaigns, was classy in defeat - congratulating the North American winners.

United 2026, in an effort to dispel the notion that is largely a USA campaign, replaced chairman Sunil Gulati, former president of the United States Soccer Federation, with co-chairs from each of the three nations. Mexico and Canada will each host 10 games, while America will get 60.

The joint North American bid defeated the bid of Morocco 134-65, with one vote for "None of the bids".

The US hosted the World Cup in 1994, while the tournament was held twice in Mexico (1970 and 1986). A summary of the technical reports was read aloud by FIFA's secretary general before the vote.

The last time Federation Internationale de Football Association voted on World Cup hosting rights was in 2010 with the decision resting with the old executive committee and they chose Russia to host the 2018 tournament and Qatar for 2022. The final list will come from the 23 candidate cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States that were included as part of the bid.

But it will likely need heavy support from Europe to pull off a shock win.

"I'm convinced that it was critical to get in front of people, face-to-face", Cordeiro said.

A New York Times tracker of declared voters suggests the North American bid has a slight edge.

The United bid also estimated double the profits that the Morocco bid had calculated - $10 billion to $5 billion for the North African nation.

World Cup 2018 Predictions: which team will be crowned champion? The United States, Canada and Mexico scored 402 out of a possible 500, while Morocco received only 275, largely due to lack of infrastructure, and factored in Moroccan officials' admission that nearly $16 billion was required for the necessary development across the country.

It will be the first time since 1994 that the US will have hosted the monthlong soccer extravaganza, and will come two years before Los Angeles welcomes back the 2028 Summer Olympics.

A Federation Internationale de Football Association inspection of the two bids was done and Morocco's bid passed the test but was deemed "high risk" in three different areas. After a drawing of lots, the United Bid will go first.

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup is an extraordinary honor and privilege", Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer, said in a statement. The Football Association has not hosted the tournament since 1966, having failed in bids for 1990, 2006 and 2018.

"We don't control a lot of things, including what's happening in Singapore", Mr. Cordeiro said to ESPN, referring to Mr. Trump's meeting Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

"We can focus on the game".

Canada hasn't been a qualifying World Cup team in 32 years, so this is a huge opportunity for Canadian players.

"Thank you so, so very much for this incredible honour". And after a qualifying cycle that saw the national team suffer the indignity of missing out on the World Cup this summer, American fans can at least say they have a significant salve.
