Vinnie Paul dead: Pantera drummer, co-founder dies at 54

NEW YORK- APRIL 1 Heavy metal band guitarist 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott of Damage Plan performs on stage during MTV2 Headbangers Ball Tour

Vinnie Paul, co-founder and drummer of the metal band Pantera, has died aged 54, the band announced on Facebook.

'Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away, ' the post reads.

Subsequently, Vinnie Paul joined Hellyeah, with the band's 2016 album Undeniable featuring a previously unreleased recording by Dimebag on a cover of Phil Collins' track I Don't Care Anymore.

The death was confirmed by Billboard.

Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul has sadly passed away.

Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell formed Damageplan in 2003.

Paul was also the drummer for heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah.

In 2004 the two brothers formed a new band, Damageplan, but later that year a 25-year-old man stormed the stage at a gig in Columbus, Ohio, shooting dead Abbott and three others. In addition to Paul, the band also featured Mudvayne members Chad Gray (vocalist ) and Greg Tribbett (guitarist), as well as Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell.

Since the news of Vinnie's death, many musicians have paid tribute. Among those mourning Paul Saturday morning is Megadeth's Dave Mustaine. Abbott was shot in the head multiple times by a deranged fan.

"Rest in peace, Vinnie", Gene Simmons, bassists and co-founder of stadium rock giants Kiss wrote on Twitter. "Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Van Halen, all my favorite bands had really great grooves to their music", Paul told OnllineDrummer.com in 2015. Vinnie Paul showed us nothing but love.

"RIP and condolences to his family".

"No further details are available at this time", the statement added.

"The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time", the band said.
