YouTube Music, YouTube Premium officially launch in U.S

Back in May, Google first officially announced the launch of brand-new music service called YouTube Music and a new ad-free YouTube service called YouTube Premium.

Finally, the YouTube team also announced that its YouTube Premium option (formerly YouTube Red) - which includes all of the benefits of YouTube Music and YouTube Red in one subscription - is now available in 17 countries across the globe.

There are also thousands of pre-built playlists based on genre, mood and activity.

YouTube Music also claims to offer a more personalised service than its rivals and has a "smart search" function if you're unsure of an act's name or the song title. No problem - you can search for them instead and the app should surface the song you're looking for.

You've got a main homescreen that'll show suggested albums, tracks and videos along with stuff you've recently listened to and new releases. The hottest videos in the world right now are right there, on their own dedicated Hotlist screen. Much of that "viewing" is actually music listening, as music videos consistently rank among the most popular clips on YouTube, making it one of the biggest single sources of music listening worldwide.

The plan was to roll out YouTube Premium and YouTube Music in Canada, replacing the YouTube Red services the company previously had.

There are interesting other features in the Android and iOS apps too, including the ability to have a custom mixtape of up to 100 songs downloaded to your device and updated regularly.

YouTube Music is ad-supported (read free, with audio ads) but you can pay £9.99 per month (or £14.99 for a family plan) to get YouTube Music Premium with background playback, downloads and no ads.

You can find more information about YouTube Premium right here, and check out the new YouTube Music web player right here.

Google is also launching YouTube Premium. If you have not yet tried out the paid version of Google Play Music, you can try the new YouTube Music Premium for free for three months.

YouTube's Premium services are competitively priced, hitting the average monthly subscription cost of $9.99 for their Music service. YouTube Music will eventually take the place of the current Google Play Music, but not for a while, and those users will still have access to their purchased music, uploads and playlists. For that reason, it's hard to see YouTube Music proving all that popular without a subscription. There's no word on when or if those customers will get a price hike.
