West Nile Virus has been identified in Butte County every year since its arrival in 2004.

For those individuals who do spend their mornings and evenings outdoors, the health district recommends wearing light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, while also making sure exposed skin is covered with a mosquito repellent that contains DEET or picaridin. Mosquitoes can then transmit it to other birds or to humans or horses.

Check that door and window screens fit properly and don't have any holes.

Serious cases of West Nile virus are rare, but can cause swelling of the brain, loss of vision, paralysis and even brain damage.

Old tires are a ideal breeding site for mosquitoes and should be discarded.
