Kevin Anderson has booked his place in the Wimbledon men's singles final after overcoming John Isner in a record five-set marathon on Centre Court.

But it falls short of the 11 hours and five minutes that it took for Isner to beat France's Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set in their first-round match at Wimbledon in 2010.

The South African won the opening set on a tie-break but lost two subsequent tie-breaks before he levelled the match 6-4 in the fourth. Isner took the second set tiebreaker 7-6 (5), punctuating it with an ace.

Anderson will now play the victor of either Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal.

Anderson will play again in the final on Sunday - hopefully there, a victor will be decided in four sets or less.

He finally broke the 33-year-old American in the 49th game of the decider after coming close in a couple of earlier games and looked impassive as he held his nerve to secure victory. Isner in particularly started to appear tired at the set wore on.

That didn't happen through the first 12 games of the last set, with each player holding serve to reach 6-all.

Isner double-faulted to set up a set point for Anderson when serving at 5-4, but he saved it with a 129 miles per hour second serve that the South African couldn't return.

Anderson had beaten 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to reach the semifinal against Isner.

In a match between two of the game's biggest servers, Anderson started the match with a double-fault.

Nadal has 17 major titles, two at the All England Club. Though Raonic outgunned Isner in that respect - 31 to 25 - he was unable to see through service games as convincingly.
