ANP leader Haroon Bilour among 20 martyred in Peshawar blast

Haroon Bilour was approaching the rally organised in connection with his election campaign on Circular Road when the explosion took place

Quoting Peshawar police chief Qazi Jamil, AP reported that 35 people were wounded in the attack, including Bilour's 16-year-old son.

The ANP was the main target of Taliban attacks in the 2013 election as well.

Presently, 62 people injured in suicide attack are seeking treatment at Lady Reading Hospital, authorities confirmed.

Haroon Bilour was approaching the rally organised in connection with his election campaign on Circular Road when the explosion took place.

Rescuers and police teams rushed to the site and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.

The politicians facing security threats included the former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief ministers Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Akram Durrani and ANP's Ameer Haider Hoti.

More than 30 people injured in the explosion.

The Bomb Disposal Squad has confirmed that the blast was a suicide attack.

The ANP and its ally the Pakistan Peoples Party were unable to campaign for the last general election in 2013 because of threats and attacks on their events and supporters by terrorist groups like the Pakistani Taliban.

This is the second terrorist attack on an election rally in Pakistan ahead of the July 25 general election.

ANP senior leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the attack was meant to derail democracy and delay the elections scheduled for July 25. "People should vote for the candidate of their choice, without any fear", he added.

"This shows weakness of our security institutions and a conspiracy against transparent elections", he said in a statement.

Global and Pakistani rights groups have recently accused the army and its intelligence agency of intimidating media outlets in an attempt to stifle criticism of the military, accused by some of seeking to play a dominant role in the country's politics.

The Pakistan Army announced on Tuesday it would deploy over 371,000 troops to ensure peaceful and fair and free elections on July 25.

"Six people include Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan, Awami National Party leaders Asfandyar Wali and Ameer Haider Hoti, Qaumi Watan Party head Aftab Sherpao, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl leader Akram Khan Durrani and Hafiz Saeed's son Talha Saeed".
