Auto News: Toyota Supra To Race In NASCAR Next Year

NASCAR Drive for Diversity at Norfolk State

The new model Supra will be revealed next week during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but Toyota drivers Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell unveiled the NASCAR version at Daytona as the second tier series takes a distinct sports vehicle flavour.

Although the Supra is taking over for the Camry in NXS, Toyota will still run a version of the family sedan in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. "Supra's return in production form is huge news, but now we're also going to see this iconic sports auto return to American motorsport".

The Supra will make its NASCAR racing debut on February 16, 2019.

Per Xfinity Series rules, the NASCAR Supra will rely on a hulking V-8 engine and an old-school four-speed manual gearbox to push power rearward to a nine-inch Ford rear end with a locking differential.

"We've had tremendous success working with Calty to develop race cars that match the look, feel and excitement of their showroom counterparts", said David Wilson, president of TRD. The groups began work on the NASCAR Supra in 2017.

Kyle Busch hopes to be the first man to drive it to victory.

"When Ed (Laukes) told me they were bringing Supra back, I nearly didn't believe him". In its stead, the Japanese auto giant will field a race vehicle that previews the look of the upcoming Toyota Supra.

The Toyota Camry is headed to its final pit stop in NASCAR's Xfinity Series.

Reflecting Toyota's commitment to motorsports in America, the manufacturer now showcases six models across eight series in America.

The Supra was originally produced by Toyota in 1978, but its sales were discontinued in 1998 in the United States. Toyota has said however that they will reveal more information in the future.
