BA warns of continued disruption after Heathrow chaos

It said on Twitter to passengers asking for an update on the sitution: "Heathrow experienced a fire alarm activation that impacted the operation of the airfield for a short while".

Despite only being suspended for about an hour, it is likely thousands of passengers had flights delayed or cancelled, and other travellers will have missed connecting flights.

"As a result of the temporary closure of Heathrow Airport's air traffic control tower earlier this afternoon, a small number of flights from all airlines were forced to divert to alternative airports", he added.

British Airways has warned passengers should expect "some knock-on disruption" following IT issues on Wednesday. It's not terribly helpful... Nobody's being sorted out. They can't re-book the flights because they've got no computer system.

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said the control tower at the airport had been evacuated.

The outage caused delays and cancellations, with BA's Terminal 5 particularly badly affected.

No other airlines are thought to be involved with Virgin Atlantic gleefully confirming it was unaffected.

The failure is a blow as airlines gear up for the peak holiday period.

"We are working with our supplier to resolve the matter and are sorry for the disruption to our customers' travel plans", British Airways said in a statement, as quoted by the newswire.
