Marvel Studios' Black Widow movie is one step closer to happening, as the film has now set a director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Australian director Cate Shortland was selected by the superhero studio from a pool of over 70 directors, most of whom interviewed with Marvel President and CEO Kevin Feige, Johansson and other studio executives.

Reports suggest Marvel bosses met with over 60 filmmakers over the past 18 months before agreeing to hand the job to Shortland earlier this week.

The Russian spy-turned action hero gets her first standalone movie after supporting roles in a slew of superhero films including The Avengers and Captain America franchises.

Scarlett Johansson is expected to reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. Female director Cate Shortland has been signed on to direct the long-overdue film.

Shortland's past credits include "Lore" and "The Berlin Syndrome", both of which featured female leads.

Shortland doesn't even have agency representation, but Johansson pushed for the filmmaker to land the gig as the actress had a strong hand in picking this director.

The Black Widow was first introduced to the MCU in 2010's Iron Man 2 and has since then appeared inThe Avengers, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War. The Black Widow screenplay will be written by Jac Schaeffer, who most recently authored the script for Nasty Women, the gender-swapped remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
