Boris Johnson warns Theresa May she must scrap Brexit plans

Cardboard cutouts of the 12 'superhero' Tory rebels at a Brexit protest

In response to this, the government says joining a customs union would mean the United Kingdom would still have to apply external tariffs to other trading partners and so would stop the United Kingdom striking new trade deals around the world [VIDEO] after Brexit.

It is rare for ministers to deliver such a speech in Parliament.

But he warned in the 18 months since that speech, a "fog of self-doubt" has fallen over Britain's stance.

The entire trade bill passed by 31 votes and now moves to the House of Lords for further scrutiny before returning to the Commons for a final vote.

Addressing the House of Commons in his resignation speech, Johnson described his 18 months stint as a "fog of self-doubt" with the United Kingdom handing over a £40 billion Brexit fee, accepting European Court jurisdiction and the uncertain question of the Northern Irish border.

The 1990 Howe speech is widely credited with being one of the key events that brought down Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

But by sticking to her plan for a "business-friendly" departure, May has thrown down the gauntlet to Brexit supporters and pro-EU lawmakers in her party who are at war with each other, and ― for some ― with the prime minister herself.

Winning by just six votes, the government defeated an amendment to its Trade Bill, which was pushed by rebel Conservative MPs, by 307 to 301. "We need to take one decision now before all others and that is to believe in this country and what it can do".

"We got them straight away because there were no borders or checks ... after Brexit we could, in effect, create a hard border so this would not be so easy".

"Instead we dithered. We burned through negotiating capital".

The pro-EU faction was furious that, earlier in the week, May's government had made a number of concessions to the Brexit-supporting faction.

He said: "We have time in these negotiations".

"If the Prime Minister can fix that vision once again before us, then I believe she can deliver a great Brexit for Britain with a positive, self-confident approach that will unite this party, unite this House and unite this country as well".

"We have consistently voted to protect people's jobs, wages and standard of living by maintaining our place in the single market and the customs union, but if making it happen requires entering into an all-party government, so be it".

The backlash has seen the prime minister face persistent rumours her MPs are planning to topple their leader.

But Irish PM Leo Varakdar has ramped up the rhetoric by issuing an extraordinary threat to block planes from flying over his country to the United Kingdom if the EU's demands are not met.
