Canada heat wave-linked death toll doubles to 33

People cool down in a public pool in Montreal Thursday

The number of people who have died due to heat-related complications has increased from yesterday's 17 to 33, around Quebec, according to Public Health officials.

Temperatures soared to 34 degrees Celsius (93 Fahrenheit) with a humidity that made it feel closer to 40 degrees, the meteorological service said.

Residents are advised to be vigilant, drink a lot of water and most of the time to be in rooms where there is air conditioning. "Heat risk in an urban setting is a combination of medical, social and environmental exposures".

Environment Canada lifted heat warnings for the regions, including Quebec, for the next several days. Signs of heat illness could include cramps and rashes, and among the people with the highest risk of suffering are generally older adults, young children, the homeless and people with chronic illnesses.

"Montreal is big heat island", he said, referring to an environmental phenomenon caused by a lack of vegetation and an abundance of concrete.

Heat warnings have also been issued for much of Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The death toll in Canadian heat wave has reached 54.

Public health officials said on Friday that coroner investigations will be completed to confirm that the reported fatalities are all heat related.

Large parts of Ontario have experienced similarly sweltering conditions this week, though unlike Quebec no deaths have been reported there.
