CDC warning on Kellogg's Honey Smacks: "Do not eat this cereal"

CDC warning on Kellogg's Honey Smacks:

Kellogg Company, which did not respond to an immediate request for comment, launched an investigation into a third-party manufacturer who produces the cereal in mid-June after the infections were reported, according to the FDA.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said on Thursday recalled Kellogg Co Honey Smacks cereal was still being sold at retail outlets and warned consumers not to purchase the product.

The Salmonella outbreak linked to Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal has now spread to 33 states, including Florida.

A total of 100 people have been sickened as a result; 30 people have been hospitalized. "The FDA has learned that some retailers are still selling this product".

The CDC announced Thursday that customers should avoid Honey Smacks, tweeting, "Do not eat this cereal". "Additionally, the public is urged to report any product being offered for sale to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their region".

Two people in Kentucky have become ill with this strain of Salmonella.

People infected with salmonella bacteria can show symptoms after just 12 hours, including diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.

Symptoms last about four to seven days, and although most people improve without treatment, some may require hospitalization because of severe diarrhea. About 450 people die in the United States each year from salmonella. Pennsylvania (8), MA (7), and California (6) have the most cases, but illnesses are widespread and affecting all ages.
