Chelsea part ways with manager Antonio Conte

55 days ago Conte celebrates Chelsea’s FA Cup win after beating Manchester United 1-0

Antonio Conte's protracted divorce from Chelsea was finalised on Friday (Saturday NZ Time) when he was sacked after a two-year tenure in which he won the English Premier League and FA Cup but failed to gain the power he craved at the London club.

It has been widely expected that Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri would be Conte's replacement, although Chelsea have struggled to come to an agreement with the Serie A club over his release.

Will Chelsea secure a return to Champions League football this season?

Chelsea finally confirmed Conte's departure on Friday, with Cesc Fabregas paying tribute to the Italian coach on Twitter.

Conte's average of 2.14 points per game in the Premier League is bettered only by Alex Ferguson (2.16) and Guardiola (2.34).

The 48-year-old Italian, who returned to pre-season training this week, had one year remaining on his contract.

In Terry's final season at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea sailed to the 2016/17 Premier League title in a convincing fashion in what was a fitting end to the defender's time with his boyhood club. "Great man, Great manager".

"Thank You Boss", Terry posted on Instagram alongside a photo of the two of them holding the Premier League trophy.

However, while present players may have had issues with Conte, former Chelsea legend John Terry, who left after the league title winning campaign had nothing but praise for him.

In May, Napoli appointed Carlo Ancelotti to replace Sarri amid speculation that the latter could take the Chelsea job.

Sarri didn't win a major title at Napoli, however, and that would not be tolerated at Chelsea.

That is not Chelsea's usual protocol and it is also believed lawyers are still haggling over how much to pay the former Juventus and Italy manager.
