Chelsea sack Antonio Conte

Chelsea transfer news Abramovich Sarri Conte

The Italian clashed with the higher ups over transfer spending policies, and given the extremely itchy trigger finger of owner Roman Abramovich, it was inevitable that Conte's days were numbered.

Maurizio Sarri is finally on his way to Chelsea.

Chelsea's Italian head coach Antonio Conte gestures on the touchline during the English Premier League football match between West Ham United and Chelsea at The London Stadium, in east London on December 9, 2017.

Current manager Antonio Conte has one more season on his current deal with the club, but the London club seem to be done with their EPL and FA Cups winning tactician.

Chelsea finished fifth in the table, five points behind Liverpool for the final Champions League spot.

It was a great contrast to his first year in England, when he took Chelsea from a tenth place finish the previous season, to the title in dominant fashion.

He still had a year to run on a £9m-a-season deal, renegotiated last summer in the wake of the league championship triumph, and will be due a hefty payoff. Napoli refused to end Sarri's contract despite hiring Carlo Ancelotti as manager.

But The Sun say Chelsea are hopeful that, now Sarri is in charge, the trio will decide to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Jorginho is unlikely to be the only new arrival at Stamford Bridge and another of Sarri's former players at Napoli has been linked: Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain.

For other fans, however, the departure is a bit more bittersweet.

Sarri is expected to be in charge of Chelsea's pre-season training camp in Australia.

Chelsea are also close to signing Napoli midfielder Jorginho, who played under Sarri at Empoli and the Naples. Sarri used powerful yet technically gifted midfielders at Napoli such as Amadou Diawara and Allan, so Loftus-Cheek could feature in his plans.
