Donald Glover, John Legend, & Bruno Mars Score Emmy Nominations

Rachel Brosnahan The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

"Game of Thrones" roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but facing a formidable opponent in "The Handmaid's Tale, " last year's top drama series.

With women's rights advocates angry over President Donald Trump's nomination of a deeply conservative judge to serve on the Supreme Court, a show about a fictional nightmarish America run by a totalitarian regime bent on oppressing women is tipped to steal some of the thunder of "Thrones". Interestingly, although James Corden is often nominated as a producer for his CBS late night talk show and his "Carpool Karaoke" specials, he scored a first time performer nomination this year, as well, for "James Corden's Next James Corden", again in the short form actor category. "The Handmaid's Tale" contributed to 27 nominations for Hulu, while "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" helped Amazon collect 22. NBC was a distant third with 78, a figure that put it first among broadcast networks. Medfield's Uzo Aduba has been nominated for Supporting Actress for "Orange Is the New Black" three times (winning twice, in 2014 and 2015), while Wayland and West Roxbury's Taylor Schilling was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014.

The last time there were no freshman dramas in the top category was 2009 when sophomore Mad Men won its second straight best series title.

"TBS bravely put a woman over 45 on TV and in turn I only got yelled at by the president once", she said in a statement. Or maybe it's just that we're never going to be happy in this era of "peak TV".

The actresses who squeezed Kidman and Watts out of the supporting actress in a limited series category were: Adina Porter (American Horror Story: Cult); Penelope Cruz and Judith Light (The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story); Letitia Wright (Black Museum); Merritt Wever (Godless); and Sara Bareilles (Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert). The show, which was canceled after Roseanne Barr's racist tweet last month, was skipped over for Outstanding Comedy Series. "We're grateful to all our nominees for making this the eighth year we've had 100 nominations or more". The awards will be handed out at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 17 and broadcast on NBC.
