Donald Trump claims Germany 'totally controlled' by Russian Federation, airs list of grievances

President Donald Trump gestures as he walks away after being greeted by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg left before a summit of heads of state and government at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday

"If you look at it, Germany is a captive of Russia", Trump said during his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

"I've never seen a President say anything as odd and counterproductive as President Trump's harangue against North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Germany", Kerry wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

Germany is not a captive of anyone, neither Russian Federation nor the US, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in response to US President Donald Trump's description of his country as a "captive" of Russian Federation.

"I wanted to say that, because of current events, I have witnessed this myself, that a part of Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union".

Trump, who allies hope will sign off on a summit deal to step up the West's deterrence of Russian Federation, will hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel later on Wednesday.

"I am very glad that we are united today in freedom as the Federal Republic of Germany and that we can therefore also make our own independent policies and make our own independent decisions".

By slapping higher tariffs on European Union metals experts and threatening more on cars, Trump has shown his anger at the US trade deficit with the European Union.

At the breakfast, Mr. Stoltenberg defended Germany's pipeline deal, saying all the countries of Europe should be able to work together.

But the sweeping nature of this claim inspired us to take another look at one of the president's oft-repeated complaints.

"The United States is spending far too much and other countries are not paying enough, especially some".

Trump had said, "Frankly, Putin may be easiest of them all - who would think?"

"I have great confidence they'll be spending more", he said.

"Trump wants to see our allies share more of the burden and at a very minimum meet their already stated obligations".

Theresa May has asked Donald Trump to raise the issue of Russian aggression against the west, including the Salisbury nerve agent attack, when he meets Vladimir Putin for high-stakes talks next week.

He said the United Kingdom contributes $61 billion, Germany $51 billion and Canada "an embarrassing" $21 billion. "And I think that leaders are also looking forward to your thoughts about the meeting with President Putin later on". Germans wouldn't agree with that. "They are a very strong people".

Trump said Germany's closure of coal and nuclear power plants on environmental grounds had increased its dependence, like much of the rest of Europe, on Russian gas.

Arriving at Nato, Ms Merkel sought to put her countries ties to the western alliance in historical context.

Merkel, for her part, called the two nations "good partners" and said "we wish to continue to co-operate in the future". A source close to Macron said Trump had voiced his "personal attachment" to Europe and gave "rather positive and constructive messages" to his allies. Just nine of the military alliance's 29 members are expected to reach or surpass that target this year.

What NATO partners dispute is Trump's repeated suggestion that the US gets little in return for its commitment to defend member countries if threatened. The primary way to do this, is for each nation to increase their defense budget to two percent of their respective GDPs.
