Eight boys rescued from Thai cave recovering — Sunglasses and chocolates

Ambulances holding the rescued boys

Divers escorted the children, who wore equipment to help them breathe.

The 12 boys, part of a football team, and their coach were stranded in Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand on June 23. Rescue operations have halted for the night and will restart on Tuesday.

The boys' ordeal has transfixed millions of people, as a massive rescue effort was planned and mounted.

The Thai rescue effort has been assisted by experts from around the world, and the death of a former Thai Navy SEAL diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday underscored the dangers of the mission.

The four boys are now "safe and conscious" in hospital after they were extracted from the Tham Luang Nang Non caves in Chiang Rai, officials said. A British diving team reached the 12 boys and their coach after nine days.

The path to save the boys proved to be life-threatening as one of the volunteer divers, an ex-Thai Navy SEALs, died while on the rescue mission.

But crews continue to work with the knowledge that additional monsoon rains could threaten the operation and put the remaining kids and their coach in peril.

Narongsak Osottanakorn, head of the rescue operation, said a team of divers went back into the cave Monday morning, local time. But officials waited several hours before confirming their rescue.

"Everyone is in high spirits and are happy to get out". It was 10 days before the boys were miraculously located, and the remaining five have been in the cave for eight days. He said a medic and three SEALS in the cave, who've been looking after those trapped, will also come out.

The eight boys brought out on Sunday and Monday were in good health overall, although two had suspected lung infections.

"All eight are in good health, no fever. everyone is in a good mental state", Jesada Chokedamrongsuk, permanent secretary of the public health ministry, told reporters on Tuesday at Chiang Rai hospital in the clearest update on their condition so far.

"The kids are footballers so they have high immune systems", Jedsada said.

Family members have seen at least some of the boys from behind a glass isolation barrier, and Jedsada said doctors may let the boys walk around their beds Tuesday.

Four other youngsters and their soccer coach are still inside. They successfully extracted the second group of four a full two hours faster than the first, officials said.

Weather forecasters warned heavy rain could hit the area through the week.

Eight of the boys were rescued by a team of Thai and global divers on Sunday and Monday.

The SpaceX and Tesla founder developed and tested a "kid-sized" submarine that he suggested might be able to assist with the rescue.
