European specifications revealed for Suzuki Jimny Motors

Full screen

"The Jimny is synonymous with the Suzuki brand and to have an all-new model on its way is something worth talking about". The Suzuki Jimny has been priced in a range of 14,58,000-19,06,200 JPY (Rs 9.08 lakh to Rs 11.87 lakh), whereas the Jimny Sierra has will be available at 17,60,400-20,62,800 JPY (Rs 10.94 lakh to Rs 12.82 lakh).

Suzuki has released European specs for its new Jimny, with the iconic 4×4 boasting improved safety kit as well as a new engine.

In SA, the Jimny is likely to be powered by a "newly developed" 1,5-litre petrol engine. The model, as reported earlier, will be sold with a 660cc petrol motor for the Japanese domestic market. The standard five-speed Manual Jimny claims a top speed of 90mph, while the four-speed automatic vehicle tops out at 87mph.

Suzuki hasn't quoted any performance figures - but then the Jimny has never been about acceleration or top speed; it's about taking you to places very few other standard off-roaders can go, in more comfort than you'd expect, and bringing you safely home again. Power is sent to a part-time four-wheel drive system via a transfer case, with a brake-type limited-slip differential to optimise traction. It also gets three-link rigid axle suspension for off-road agility. We look forward to doing just that when we get a new Jimny for review. Much of the design appears similar to that applied to the latest Mercedes-Benz G-class, such as the squared-off wheel arches and tail-lights located low on the bumper. The boxy profile with large windows and small pillars maximises visibility, while the 15-inch alloy wheels are housed in chunky cladded wheelarches.

Suzuki says the interior has been designed with function and form with all controls usable while wearing gloves. Both the Jimny and the Jimny Sierra are three-door SUVs with the former being shorter by 155mm (3,395mm), narrower by 170mm (1,475mm) and lower to the ground by 5mm (ground clearance of 205mm).

Alongside off-road assistance features such as hill hold and descent control, the new Jimny also gets automatic emergency braking, six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning and high beam assist.
