Explosion heard near Cairo airport, flights unaffected

There are very few details as yet, but there has been a massive explosion near Egypt's Cairo International Airport.

People in Egypt's capital residents reporting hearing a loud explosion and then seeing red smoke rising from the factory.

Only 12 injuries were reported so far; the injured were immediately transferred to the nearest hospital to receive immediate treatment.

The explosion reportedly took place just before 11 p.m. local time.


All flights have been suspended at the airport while officials investigate the blast. Egyptian Civil aviation Minister Younis Al Masry confirmed this as the probable cause, saying that two fuel tanks were involved. Sky News Arabic correspondent Faisal bin Huraiz shared an eyewitness video showing an explosion in the direction of what appeared to be Cairo International Airport.

According to State TV, the civil defense team has brought fire at Cairo fuel tanks near airport under control. FlightRadar24 reports that the airport is still operating.

The ministry's spokesperson affirmed that the flights at the airport were not at all affected by the explosion. The bomb eventually exploded, killing everyone on board.
