For Russia, Trump is creating more problems than he solves

Trump extends invitation to Putin,Trump-Putin,Washington

President Vladimir Putin during a press conference with US President Donald Trump in Helsinki on Monday proposed that special counsel Robert Mueller's team could travel to Russia to question 12 Russian intelligence officers charged with interfering in the 2016 presidential election, if Russia is allowed to interrogate some Americans. "There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems...but they can ALL be solved!"

Coats made those surprise admissions Thursday in his first public comments since rebutting Trump's questioning of the USA intelligence assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election.

President Trump should have issued a more full-throated condemnation this week of Russian election meddling in the 2016 presidential election, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Thursday at the Aspen Security Forum.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Twitter that Mr Trump had "agreed to ongoing working level dialogue between the two security council staffs" during Monday's summit between the two leaders in Helsinki.

Amid the unrelenting criticism of Trump's performance inside the United States, several lawmakers wanted the interpreter of Trump in his one-on-one meeting with Putin to testify before Congress for what exactly the two leaders had said in Helsinki.

US President Donald Trump said he'd be Vladimir Putin's "worst enemy" if the Russian president ever crossed the line.

"By playing into Vladimir Putin's hands", he continues, "the leader of the free world actively participated in a Russian disinformation campaign that legitimized Russian denial and weakened the credibility of the United States to both our friends and foes overseas".

Congressional Republicans have criticised the White House for even considering the offer, while Mr McFaul has called it a "ridiculous request from Putin".

How did Trump respond to Putin's suggestion?

Coats said Thursday he wished the president hadn't undermined the conclusions of American intelligence agencies while standing next to Putin and felt it was his duty to correct the record.

"The ball's in your court", said Putin with an air of forced joviality as he presented Trump with a gift to mark their meeting.

"I call on President Trump to say once and for all, not through his spokespeople, that the lopsided, disgraceful trade he called an "incredible offer" is off the table".

The Russian claims against the Americans, including former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, involve allegations of fraud and corruption. Chris Coons, a Democrat from DE, that would assert support for the intelligence community and endorse its findings that Russian Federation intervened in the U.S. elections.

Trump clapped back at his critics and said he was "far tougher on Russia" than his predecessors.

Earlier in the administration, Coats' voice was drowned out by the more outspoken Mike Pompeo, who was Central Intelligence Agency director before Trump tapped him as secretary of state.

Putin's proposal would call for a vote conducted under worldwide auspices by the residents of the separatist territories on their status, the people said.

Still, Trump has expressed a preference for the White House setting for major meetings, including floating an invitation to Washington for North Korea's Kim Jong Un after their meeting in Singapore last month.

In recent days, dozens of Republican lawmakers have denounced Russian Federation and backed the U.S. intelligence community, making clear there is no daylight between themselves and the findings that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 United States elections and still poses a risk to upcoming elections. She said at the Aspen Forum that Russian Federation is attempting to "cause chaos on both sides". There is US$380 million approved in the current budget for the programme, which is meant to help states strengthen election systems from hacking and other cyberattacks.
