He's an appeals court judge - federal appeals court judge in D.C. And heading into the weekend, he was seen as a favorite.

The decision has far-reaching implications for America on everything from abortion to guns to immigration. He expressed renewed interest in Hardiman - the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly. Trump made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon (NZ time).

With reality television-style suspense, he had kept everyone guessing up until the last moment. Reporter: "How many people are you deciding between now?"

"I am grateful to you and I am humbled by your confidence in me". Raymond Kethledge is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit who has been dubbed "Gorsuch 2.0". He also worked on independent counsel Ken Starr's investigation of President Bill Clinton.

Kethledge went to the University of Michigan, and then Michigan Law, where he graduated second in his class. His views on abortion are generally unknown, but Kavanaugh was part of a panel that signed an order previous year to prevent an illegal teenage immigrant from getting an abortion.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has been working under existing procedures under a federal law meant to protect kids from human trafficking that can take some time to complete.

Kavanaugh ruled in one case involving abortion a year ago and is considered a likely opponent of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

Each of the nine justices serves a lifetime appointment.

None of the judges named is older than 53, meaning any of them could sit on the court for several decades, allowing Trump to make a lasting imprint on the nation's laws.

His appointment will not change the ideological tilt of a court that already has a 5-4 conservative majority, but he could nevertheless shift the bench further right. He was said to be the leading contender in the days after Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced his retirement. But Judge Kavanaugh may not be so accommodating.

Barrett, 46, is a former law clerk to the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

The front-runner was a front-runner for a reason. In the end, however, the safe pick won out.

All four federal judges have the endorsement of major Republican legal groups, most importantly the powerful Federalist Society. "Casey's willingness to oppose any nominee off of a list that includes judges he has previously voted for shows he will oppose President Trump at all costs, even when doing so makes him look like a partisan hack". This isn't the first time he's helped nominees get through the Senate.

A nominee needs a simple majority of 51 votes to be confirmed. Meanwhile, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona is battling brain cancer and has not been back to the Capitol since December. Kyl also was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will hold a hearing on Trump's choice for the court. That decision was later overturned.

The White House announced Monday that former Sen.

All eyes on which senators?

"Maybe a handful of Democrats will vote for a Trump pick because they have to politically". Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. It's the same court that produced three current high court justices.

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens.

Activists have sent coat hangers - an abortion rights symbol - to her office.
