Funko Stock Jumps on Fortnite Toys Deal

Funko, the pop culture consumer products company with a stable of top-shelf licenses, announced a new partnership with Epic Games to create toys and collectibles around the mega-popular "Fortnite" video game. It was a few days later that Playground mode returned to Fortnite, and now Epic has delivered an update on just went wrong with that launch.

Some have suggested adding an incentive for eliminations or even exclusively basing the game's result on who has the most eliminations-something the weekly Friday Fortnite tournaments have done to positive feedback. While it's not necessarily stealthy, which can be a really important quality in a Battle Royale game where you need to avoid conflict until you stand a good chance at winning, it still looks hilarious.

"Our matchmaking is built on something called the Matchmaking Service (MMS), which is responsible for facilitating the "handshake" between players looking to join a match and an available dedicated server open to host that match". Now we know, more specifically, that the issue is related to how many matches the Playground mode made versus the Battle Royale mode.

What this meant was the nodes were continuously requesting to join servers, requesting extra servers, and overall taking 15 times longer to check for available servers. As the news release puts it, this ultimately led to the CPU holding "a backlog of pending requests resulting in a feedback loop" which meant Epic Games had no choice but to close the Playground for repairs. Epic had to spend a lot of time testing this solution in cycles that took several hours to complete each time, but it says that testing ensured Playground mode - or any of Fortnite's various modes, for that matter - would be able to handle a rush of players in the future.

Epic Games tweeted that the servers are back online.
